Modulation Index (FM)
Two terms that are closely related and that help determine the bandwidth of an FM signal are the frequency deviation and the modulation index.
β = \(\frac{Δ f}{f_m}\)
β = (\frac{Δ f}{f_m}\)
Where:
β = modulation index
Δ f = frequency deviation
fm = highest frequency component of the modulating signal
The frequency deviation, Δf, can be defined as the maximum deviation of the FM-modulated frequency from the carrier frequency. So a modulating signal that doesn’t vary much in amplitude will result in a smaller Δf
